Fit For Her Journey

Don't Ignore God's Signs

Allie Gibbs Season 2 Episode 4

What happens when we treat God like a spiritual accessory rather than pursuing a genuine relationship with Him? This soul-stirring episode challenges the transactional approach to faith that has become all too common in modern american Christianity.

"Too often we look for God's hand instead of seeking His face." This profound statement captures the heart of our discussion as we explore what it means to pray with true humility and thanksgiving rather than entitlement. Drawing wisdom from the word of God, we unpack how mature faith transforms not just what we pray for, but how we respond when God's answers look different than we expected.

As Christians, we're called to "let love be genuine" and to "abhor what is evil." But what does this actually look like in practice? We explore the uncomfortable but necessary process of learning to hate sin (not people) and how this hatred develops naturally as we grow closer to God. From our daily habits including food and exercise to our willingness to engage in godly community despite past hurts, every aspect of our lives reflects whether we're presenting ourselves "for the work of righteousness, not sin."

Whether you're new to your faith journey or have been walking with Jesus for years, this message offers both challenge and comfort. God meets you exactly where you are—no perfection required—but loves you too much to leave you unchanged. Speaker 1:

Well, I want to jump right into it today, but first hear me when I say this. It is a true statement in this saying don't ignore the signs you ask God to show you. I say that because oftentimes we pray to God about something and truthfully, in all honesty, god does not always reveal the answer or answers to those prayers right away. For some things he does, but not all. God is not a genie where we can come to him and make our three wishes and boom, it's granted. No, god is not a transactional God, although Philippians 4, 6-7 says do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. What's true here is God wants us to come to him with our request, but he wants us to come to him in prayer, supplication, meaning humbly, in deep need and reliance on God, with vulnerability and thanksgiving, being thankful for anything God grants and gives us because it works together for our good, and not by whining or complaining, which we often do.

Speaker 1:

I know it's not easy to not complain or whine when you make your request known to God and his response is not what you expected. For example, you ask God for a promotion on your job. His response is to in fact leave that job and start a ministry. You ask God to just see you through the struggles of losing 25 pounds for vacation, and his response was for you to change your eating habits and give up alcohol completely. You asked God to remove all the drama and toxic people from your life so you can have peace. His response is to bless those who persecute you.

Speaker 1:

God wants to see if you're willing to trust him. He wants to know if you have faith as small as a mustard seed. He wants to see if you will give him all of you in totality. So his peace that surpasses all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Jesus. God is not a genie where our interactions with him are transactional. Our life is meant to be relational with God, so the requests we make known to him and our desires are in alignment with his good and perfect and pleasing will for our lives.

Speaker 1:

And I know for many of us life and God's will doesn't always feel good, perfect or pleasing to us, especially when you're seeing L's in your life, no matter how hard you try, and there's people around you that were once where you are now they're thriving. Or you're in a season of grief and you just don't know how to lean on God to get through it. Or maybe your health has turned to a decline and now you're facing an unexpected diagnosis that forces you to make immediate life changes. God is not a God who will withhold signs from his people. He is not unfamiliar with signs and wonders, especially when we come to him in prayer. We must not be set in our own ways to miss them. We definitely should not ignore the signs we ask God to show us.

Speaker 1:

I was having a conversation with my husband and I was expressing to him how, as of late, it angers me and my heart is in sorrow to see and hear people, especially in America, praising and honoring God only when there is a blessing involved, when they have received something big or when tragedy hits. And now they are calling on the prayer warriors, asking God for some type of healing or miracle. These are the people displaying God as an accessory because there is or was a transactional request they made, but indeed are far away from Jesus. You don't see that same attitude of gratitude or thanksgiving to the Lord for daily bread, showing that the Lord provides for all of our needs. You don't see honor to God in their daily lives because they are consumed by materialistic idols, fortunes and the patterns of this world and there's no signs of the fruit of the Spirit. There is an issue with their faith and hope because of entitlement and pride and there is no daily praise to the Lord for his unwavering love, grace and mercy and the gift of life that has been given. Now hear me, this is not everyone into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Now hear me, this is not everyone, but those who accessorize God to portray a godly image around other people, for likes on social media or amongst believers or family members.

Speaker 1:

How much longer can we say we are of God, god, but deny Jesus? What I mean by this is we don't come to him with humility, we don't come to him with our whole heart and in truth, we say we know him, but we don't read the word of God. We don't desire to be in godly community. Desire to be in godly community. Listen you can't know what you don't know. You won't date someone you don't desire to get to know, and you can't get to know someone if you don't talk to them. You can't build a relationship with someone without knowledge of their character, morals and values, their traits and attributes, what they're capable of rather good or bad or by how they love and treat others.

Speaker 1:

Too often people, including me I'm not excluding myself from this, because I fall short daily as well but too often we look for God's hand instead of seeking his face. Think about that. As I continue to grow in my faith and Christian journey, I can look back and see how much I have transformed and changed. This is not a boasting moment, as I am the first to say I am not perfect and I too fall short of God's glory daily. I am in the process of becoming Christ-like not perfection we all are, in fact which is why I come to God daily for forgiveness of my own sins and shortcomings. But as I was having that conversation with my husband, as I mentioned, I was reminded in the midst of that conversation of previous prayers I've made known to God, and what stood out to me was that I had previously prayed for God to help me love what he loves and hate what he hates, and maybe that's why my spirit was getting disrupted with so much anger and sorrow in my heart. And immediately it led me to several passages scripture to dive deeper.

Speaker 1:

Now hear me, sis, I know there are some of you who may be listening and you're just coming to know the Lord and your walk with him is fresh. That zeal you have in your heart for the Lord. Continue to build on that In your prayer time. Ask God to guard your heart and your mind so you can experience peace in Jesus. For my sisters who, like me, have been following Jesus, but not their whole lives, and has been on their journey for a while, remain faithful. The Lord is with you and will continue to see you through any and every situation you may face, if you continue to trust him. Insist if you are not yet a believer because I know you are listening too I want you to know this. I want you to know you are not forgotten. Jesus does his best work in people to bring light into the world. He will meet you right where you are. He loves you that much, sis, so there is no need to continue to say I need to get my life and myself together before I come to God. No, ma'am, he will leave the 99 just for you. He loves you.

Speaker 1:

I just want to take a moment to say I'm so grateful to be a part of a true Bible teaching church that honors the word of God in their teachings. I say that because something that I've learned over the past several months is the importance of wringing out our sin and what it actually looks like. God hates sin, but he loves his people, and what I know for sure is that the Bible is not just a book of historical events, but it is alive and active. Paul reminds us of this truth in Romans 12 9. Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil. Hold fast to what is good. Listen if the love we share is fake or watered down. It's not real love. We see this so much in the world today. As Christians, we all know that we should love each other, but it must be genuine, it must be sincere. If you're anything like me, it's easy to love those who love you, but when we're called to love our enemies and those who deliberately betrayed us and persecute us, whoa Lord, you want me to do what? Christians are not called to fake their love for each other, but to express it as an extension of God's love for us and ours for him, ours for him.

Speaker 1:

Abhor, which is another word for hate or to utterly dislike. You may not recognize it at first, like me, but as a Christian, we too are called to hate what is evil, which is sin Hear me, not people, but sin. And if you're a true follower of Jesus, you too will begin to hate evil, as God does, because it will begin to pain you. As you feel sorrow in your heart when it comes to sin and as you begin to transform and change, you too will begin to deal aggressively with your sin, because it pains you to pain God. So, daily we should be coming to him in full repentance and in truth of our heart, over what's sinful in us and evil in the world.

Speaker 1:

We can't be lukewarm with tolerating and accepting sin. I know it can be hard hating sin, especially the sins that intrigue us or that are close to home, as it does not always come naturally. But we must hold fast to what is good. Any and everything that is from God is good, which means to be of God. We have to dislike sin more. This does not mean you will never encounter sin. Christians are not exempt from sin. But in our love for God and taking heed to not conform to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, you will begin to love what God loves and hate what he hates.

Speaker 1:

We see it throughout scripture, as the psalmist in Psalm 97 says oh you who love the Lord, hate evil with an exclamation mark. And we learn from the blessings of wisdom in Proverbs 8, as it says the fear of the Lord is hatred of evil in the way of evil, not a fear of terror or panic, but rather a fear of God that involves a submissive, respectful honor, aligning our hearts and our desires with that of the Lord. Again, hear me, not people, but evil. The fear of the Lord is powerful in how you and I live and view our lives on a daily basis, especially when I think of how it involves submission and a respectful honor to God. Even in the mundane things in our day-to-day, god cares for us, our needs and will see us through them.

Speaker 1:

Think about your daily habits and actions. Do you honor God in how you nourish and move your body? Do you have indulging behaviors in foods, alcohol or substances, or do you practice self-control? Do you allow your mood and stresses of the day to determine your motivation to an inactive lifestyle, binge watching TV, social media and engaging in envious gossip? Or are you being faithful and patient in your discipline by actively exercising your body to promote active movement, functionality and mobility in your body to support good health and a sound mind? Do you self-isolate because of past hurt and or have an inability to trust other people, or do you pray for godly community to help you on your journey and to grow in your faith with like-minded women?

Speaker 1:

Most of these sins are connected to something we do in or through our body. With that, let's be reminded that as Christian women on this journey and following Jesus, we are to present ourselves to God for the work of righteousness, not sin. I want to leave you with this, in hopes that you are encouraged, and that is, to not take part in unfruitful works of evil. Although we live in a world of sin, we don't have to conform to it, and, as believers, we must heed to the commandments of not doing what's wrong but what's right, and by doing so we encourage others and ourselves to live according to what is right, not by means of being judgmental or in self-righteousness, but with mercy and grace and with the love of Jesus, because he first loved us. Denying sin is a powerful charge in the process of living a life that follows Jesus and honors God. The Lord hears your prayers and he is always faithful. We receive a fresh gift of grace and mercy with each new day, so I ask that you turn away from sin and draw near to Jesus before time runs out, and don't ignore the signs you ask God to show you. Amen, that's all I have, ladies, for today.
